The European Alkylphenols and Derivatives Association (CEPAD)

is a Sector Group of the European Chemical Industry Council (Cefic). CEPAD members are typically companies who manufacture alkylphenols and derivatives within Europe.

Alkylphenols (APs) are a family of organic compounds obtained by the alkylation of phenols.  They are chemical intermediates that are reacted with other compounds to create
derivative products, which are then used to make high-value, high-performance compounds that are used in a variety of applications.

Products

Alkylphenols are chemical intermediates. This means they are not used as a final product but reacted with other compounds to create derivative products, which in turn are used to make high-value, high-performance compounds that are for a range of applications.  The two most produced alkylphenols are nonylphenol (NP) and para-tert-octylphenol (ptOP).

Applications

Industrial
surfactants

Intermediate (building block chemicals) for production of industrial surfactants

Plastic
Additives

For stabilisation and UV light protection to extend the shelf life of consumer end use articles

Lubricants

Lubricants eg in motor oils to extend the service life of engines over extended drain intervals

Resins

Intermediate for production of a wide range of products

Coatings

Monomer or co-monomer for phenolic resins used in rubber production

Other applications

Specialised derivatives can improve stability, colour acceptance, reduce water sensitivity and reduce foaming
